Victorian drowns in Broadbench canal

A 21-year-old Victorian man has drowned after an “absolutely tragic” early morning swim turned fatal at a Gold Coast canal.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Hooker and Sunshine Boulevards at Broadbeach about 5.30am on Tuesday after reports a man entered the water and did not resurface.

Gold Coast Acting Superintendent Greg Baade said Surf Life Saving assisted in a desperate search for the man before his body was recovered at 9am.

Police were investigating the circumstances of the drowning, he said.

“Unfortunately this is just a terrible tragedy.”

Superintendent Baade said the man was part of a group of 10 Victorians holidaying at a residence near the incident, and three of them were in the water at the time.

“They are obviously distressed about what has happened,” he said.

He said the drowning was a timely reminder for people to only swim in patrolled areas and in designated swimming enclosures and pools.

“We try and promote safety on the waterways, a lot of work is done in that area,” he said.

An autopsy will be carried out and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
