New Zealand Warriors release NRL bad boy Kane Evans from contract

Kane Evans played 14 games for the Warriors in one season and incurred $2500 in fines and six games worth of suspensions.

The New Zealand Warriors have released fiery prop forward Kane Evans from the final year of his two-year contract.

Evans, 29, is leaving the NRL to take up an opportunity in the Super League, having made 14 appearances for the Warriors across one season.

Evans’ year at the Warriors was tarnished by on-field indiscretions.

In July, the NRL fined Evans $5000 after cameras picked up an obscenity written on his strapping tape during a game.

Three weeks later, he was placed on report three times in a game against the Sharks and sin-binned twice, first for throwing punches at Will Chambers and then for slamming his head into the turf.

In his side’s final game of the season, Evans was one of several Warriors and Titans players involved in an on-field melee. He had been due to spend the first five weeks of the 2022 season on the sideline through suspensions incurred in that game.

When contacted by NCA NewsWire, the Warriors declined to comment on whether Evans’ on-field behaviour influenced their decision to grant him a release.

“By mutual agreement we’ve parted ways amicably to enable Kane to pursue opportunities in the Super League,” Vodafone Warriors recruitment manager Peter O’Sullivan said.

“We thank Kane for the contribution he has made this season and wish him all the best for his future in England.”

Prior to his career with the Warriors, Evans spent three seasons at Parramatta between 2018 and 2020 and played for the Roosters for the four years before that.

He made 131 NRL appearances and played for NSW City, NRL All Stars and Fiji at representative level.

A Super League club is yet to formally announce that they have secured Evans’ signature.
